The November 25th has been established since 1999, by the General Assembly of the United Nations, as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, in an attempt to highlight a major problem with an international dimension. Already in 1981, several women's organizations, They had established this day,…. in memory of the horrendous murder of three brothers Mirampal, political campaigner from Dominican Republic, by order of the dictator Trujillo in 25 November 1960.
Violence against women can take many forms, physical, sexual, psychological or verbal. The more common is domestic violence, ie violent and abusive behavior against women in the family / fellow environment. Based on the imposition of power and the exercise of control by the abuser, while usually cascaded with the passage of time, in both gravity and a frequency. Knows no borders, religions or cultures. No social order, colour, educational level, age and economic situation.
Women who suffer some form of violence, often they feel ashamed and feel themselves responsible for the situation experienced, because they have reduced self-esteem and confidence. Often, also, They do not realize the seriousness of the situation, because they may have grown up in a violent environment or have stereotypes so that is a symbiosis or so that should work the "strong" sex in a relationship or family. Violence and abuse are violations of human rights in Greece and recognized as crimes and punished.
This day reminds us that we have to highlight the problem, to break the chains of silence and to encourage women accept violence or at risk of violence or multiple discrimination to seek help, in order to free themselves from the shackles of fear, isolation and guilt.
