Pneumococcal and Influenza Vaccinations: Who should get the Influenza and Pneumococcal vaccines? – Which vulnerable groups

Advice and instructions for flu and pneumococcal vaccines are given by the Hellenic Pulmonologists Association,…..

through the APE-MPE.

The safest, economic measure of primary prevention of seasonal influenza is considered influenza vaccination, which in our country usually takes place in early October each year.

The prescription of the flu vaccine started on 28 September and this year our country will be supplied 35% more doses of the vaccine and has already secured 4,2 millions of doses.

as explained the president of the Association of Pulmonologists of Greece Dr.. Stamoula Tsikrika, every new year, Vaccine construction contains inactivated influenza virus surface antigens according to last year's circulating strains. After the flu vaccine is given, the antibodies gradually increase over about two to three weeks..

Clarifies that no test is required for Covid-19 prior to vaccination according to the guidelines of international and international organizations. The quadrivalent influenza vaccines contain four strains recommended by the WHO, two executives A and two executives B.. Trivalent influenza vaccines contain two strains A and one strain B.. Side effects such as local irritation, tenderness and pain at the injection site, headache, hardship, chills and fever may occur after administration.

Ms. Tsikrika states that there is no targeted treatment for seasonal flu so far, for this reason antiviral drugs assist with other supportive treatment, without replacing the annual vaccination. Antibiotic regimens are prescribed only for microbial infection, since they do not affect the physiopathology of viral infections.

The flu vaccine

Influenza vaccination should be given primarily to individuals as a matter of priority (adults and children) belonging to the following high risk groups:

Vaccination against pneumococcus

Vaccination against pneumococcus protects against streptococcus pneumonia which causes high morbidity and mortality due to severe pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Pneumococcus is transmitted through infected droplets which are transmitted by cough, sneezing, as well as in close contact with an infected person. Pneumococcal infections are more common during the winter due to co-occurrence and climatic conditions., but at the beginning of the spring season. Although anyone can get pneumococcal disease, children under 2 years, adults over 65 years and immunocompromised individuals are the ones most at risk. Conjugated and polysaccharide vaccines are the two types of pneumococcal vaccines.

Vulnerable groups include children who belong to the following categories:
