Professor Nikolaos Sypsas revealed the two reasons why the decision was made to open schools
Infectious disease professor was invited to OPEN TV's "Hour of Greece" show, Nikos Sypsas, who spoke about all the current developments regarding the coronavirus in our country, the opening of schools but also the long-awaited Oxford vaccine, for which he characteristically said that we should have low expectations……….
More detail, regarding the opening of schools, which will take place on 7 September with full composition of classes, Mr.. Sypsas clarified that the technical details for the operation of the schools are still under discussion, while on Thursday the committee of experts is expected to reach the final instructions on how students and teachers will arrive in schools.
The professor also mentioned that both our country and the rest of European countries took the decision to reopen the schools for two main reasons.. The first is that children cannot be left without education, as "their physical space is the school" and there should be no inequalities in education. The second reason is that mainly primary school children are, according to Mr.. Sypsa, the safest pandemic age group, as based on available scientific studies they do not easily transmit the virus and are less exposed to it.
Regarding the use of the mask by children, The professor noted that the instructions of the World Health Organization state that it is safe for children aged three and over., however, the competent committee in our country has not yet reached the age limit it will set.
the 5 measures to be followed with the opening of schools
Mr.. Sypsas pointed out the five basic measures that should be a precondition for the safe opening of schools. These are:
- Mandatory use of a mask (within days it will be decided whether to wear it in all classes or from the 3rd grade onwards)
- Students will not interact with children from other departments / classes – They will have separate breaks
- Strict hygiene measures: good ventilation, disinfections, antiseptics
- Case plan at school
Special protocol for the operation of canteens
In the case of a case at school, the professor noted the following: "There is a special case management protocol. If we have a case, the whole school will not close, but specific sections, will be tracked and disinfected, so that if there is a case there is no spread ".
With,as far as canteens are concerned, the scientific committee will come up with a concrete proposal by tomorrow, Thursday 20 August. There are three scenarios on the table:
- Children go to the canteen one by one.
- Canteen staff distribute food to children.
- Do not open the canteens at all.
"There is a plan for how students will approach the canteens, if they are open. There is a discussion about canteens, we will have the final plan on Thursday ", said the professor characteristically.
