Support Measures and Recovery Plan for Santorini- After the Prime Minister's Visit

As part of the ongoing monitoring of seismic activity and the prompt mobilization of state and local authorities, the Mayor of Thira, Nikos Zorzos, welcomed Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday, February 7th. During their visit, they were briefed by local officials on the actions already taken to ensure the safety of citizens and protect the island, while also discussing immediate measures to be undertaken to restore and strengthen the infrastructure.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during his visit, stated that the government remains fully committed to supporting Santorini and the local community, emphasizing the need to maintain calm. He highlighted the importance of continued monitoring of seismic activity, and stressed that the government's priority is the safety of citizens and the prevention of any danger to both residents and visitors of the island.
3 Million Euros Funding Announced by Mr. Mitsotakis
The Prime Minister made a special reference to the infrastructure that needs improvement, announcing an initial funding of 3 million euros: “We will act through the Ministry of National Defense to build an evacuation gate on the southern part of the island, which will cover us in any scenario. There are infrastructure issues, such as the landslide problem in the Caldera, and projects will be carried out, like the new port in Monolithos”.
“I am here to say unequivocally that the state is close to you. A serious state must prepare for the worst-case scenario with the hope that the best will come. Santorini is an iconic destination, and it is our duty to protect its reputation. There needs to be a balance; we must be present, not letting disaster scenarios circulate,” said Mr. Mitsotakis, among other statements.
Support Measures for Santorini’s Business Community
Among the Prime Minister’s immediate plans is a meeting with the Ministry of Labor to discuss special support measures for entrepreneurship in Santorini.
“What I will do immediately, especially for the workforce, is to connect you, through the Mayor, with the Ministry of Labor and the Government's General Secretariat, to see if there are any special support measures for entrepreneurship in Santorini, which we currently deem necessary, at least to discuss them and have them ready. I hope nothing will be needed, but we must be prepared for everything,” Mr. Mitsotakis mentioned.
Once the geological phenomenon ended, Mayor Zorzos of Thira requested a meeting with Prime Minister Mitsotakis to discuss all matters related to Santorini, a request which was accepted.
