Water Supply Alert: Water Cut in Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros and Platys Gialos (Oct 10) - New Shut-Off Valve for a Resilient Network

Water cut on Saturday, Oct 10 in Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros and Platys Gialos for a new shut-off valve. Rest of Mykonos unaffected.

Water Supply Alert: Water Cut in Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros and Platys Gialos (Oct 10) - New Shut-Off Valve for a Resilient Network

On Saturday, October 10, the Mykonos Water & Sewerage Utility (DEYAM) will briefly interrupt water supply in Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros and Platys Gialos to install a shut-off valve at the Argyraina roundabout. The valve will allow crews to isolate future faults in small network sections. Water supply in the rest of the island continues as normal.

This is not routine maintenance. It is part of the Municipality’s consistent choice, under Mayor Christos Veronis, to upgrade and reinforce the network in advance rather than react to failures. A shut-off valve divides the network into zones, so a future fault affects a small area instead of an entire district. That is the practical meaning of resilience: a short, planned inconvenience now for fewer and smaller interruptions later.

Date: Saturday, October 10
Time: short interruption,
Affected areas: Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros, Platys Gialos
Rest of the island: normal water supply

The Incident & Rapid Response

DEYAM will carry out a targeted, controlled hydraulic intervention on Saturday, October 10. The short interruption is necessary to install a Shut-Off Valve at the Argyraina roundabout.

What the valve does, in plain terms:

It zones the network, dividing it into sections.
In the event of a future fault or maintenance work, only the section concerned is isolated.
This limits the number of households and businesses affected.

Restoring supply immediately after pressure tests are completed and the new components are safely fitted is DEYAM’s number one operational priority. The Rapid Response protocol is in force: crews and equipment are pre-positioned and the work schedule is compressed to the minimum.

Operational Impact: Who Is Affected

AFFECTED (short interruption):

Argyraina · Vougli · Drafaki · Glastros · Platys Gialos

NOT AFFECTED:

Every other area of the island. Water supply in the rest of Mykonos continues as normal, without any disruption.

Leadership on the Ground: The “Hands-On” Model

In line with the “Management by Walking Around” approach and the principle of Direct Accountability that characterise DEYAM’s management culture, the progress of the work is personally supervised on site by the Utility’s President, Mr. Dimitris Lazaridis.

“DEYAM crews will be on site (“On Site”), applying a rapid response plan.”

Sources within the Utility stress:

“The presence of management in the field is not symbolic but substantive. We apply a model of direct, active management (hands-on), ensuring that every available resource is used to serve citizens as quickly as possible.”

When the head of the organisation stands next to the crews, technical decisions are taken on the spot, with no intermediate steps.

Official Statement

“Every humanly possible effort is being made to restore water supply immediately. Installing the shut-off valve is a priority for us.”, Dimitris Lazaridis, Municipal Councillor & President of DEYAM

Analysis: The statement reflects realism, because it commits to maximum effort rather than promising the impossible. It also shows empathy, because it puts restoring water, and with it citizens’ daily lives, ahead of the technical task itself.

Q: When will water return?

A: Right after the pressure tests are completed and the work is finished. The interruption is short, and restoring supply is DEYAM’s top priority.

Q; Which areas are affected?

A: Argyraina, Vougli, Drafaki, Glastros and Platys Gialos, on Saturday, October 10.

Q: Is the rest of Mykonos affected?

A: No. Water supply in the rest of the island continues as normal, with no disruption.

Q: Why is the water being cut?

A: To install a shut-off valve at the Argyraina roundabout, so that future faults can be isolated to small sections of the network.

A short interruption today buys a more controllable network tomorrow: smaller areas affected, faster isolation of faults and better resilience at the peak of the tourist season. This is the practical meaning of the resilience approach promoted by the Municipality under Mayor Veronis, with DEYAM and its President in the field.
